The Build Side

Some clients need a system provided. Others need software built on what they already run — no migration, no re-platforming, nobody's workflow torn up. When the answer is to build on what you have —

this is what that looks like.

Live Operating Models

The model is a spreadsheet.

Model Desk turns the operating workbook a finance team already maintains into live, interactive software — every tab, chart, scenario, and driver rendered from the spreadsheet itself. Update the workbook, run one command, and every page stays current. Nobody re-keys anything.

— How it works

Every media company already has the model. It lives in a workbook one person maintains, and it gets rendered by hand — into board decks, budget reviews, scenario requests — every time somebody asks. The asking is the bottleneck. The rendering was never the value.

Model Desk removes the rendering. A script exports the workbook and the software rebuilds itself. Downside, base, upside — and every driver in between — answered by moving a slider and watching the P&L reprice, on numbers that are provably the workbook's own: a parity harness recalculates the spreadsheet and compares it to the software cell by cell, across every scenario, and fails on any difference greater than one-millionth. Every data file is hash-locked, so nothing drifts silently.

The pattern was proven inside a live engagement — pre-acquisition diligence on a multi-market local media group, where the model had to stay current for months and there were no analysts to spare. Most media companies don't staff analysts anymore. This is how the model stays alive without them.

— What changes

Board-ready, always

The deck cycle disappears. The numbers leadership sees are the numbers the model computes, the day they ask — not the version somebody assembled last quarter.

Scenarios, not requests

Sensitivity, drivers, and what-ifs answered in the room by moving a slider — not filed as a request and returned as a PDF a week later.

Verified, not approximated

Cell-by-cell parity against the workbook's own recalculation, hash-locked data files, and a hard failure the moment software and spreadsheet disagree.

The Demonstration

Put your hands on it.

Northwind Media Group is a fictional multi-market local media company with a complete working model — P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, circulation, advertising, drivers, sensitivity. The architecture is real. The data is synthetic and labeled as such, on every page.

That is not an AI strategy. It is a revenue operation that finally knows what it knows.

Field Note No. 14 — The Customer Cannot Live in One Person's Head

Model Desk sits in the same family of systems I build and run: Local Media Desk and AI Readiness and Atlas Planning OS and Atlas Creative OS and Atlas Agency OS.

An engagement starts with a conversation about the workbook you run today — what it answers, who maintains it, and what keeps going stale. Scoped and quoted before it starts.
